Our next project is to create 5 GIFs working with ideas and imagery already created in our 'fact' project from the natural history museum. Here are a few i've seen that I really like...

this on is a little longer than i will make mine as ours need to be between 1-5 seconds. I really like the movement in it though and the hand drawn quality to it.

I like the use of paper cut out here to show the bear moving around and dancing, the coloured paper with a slight texture/grain to it helps it look as if the fur is moving.

although i'm not overly keen on the style of drawing on the work here, i really like the flow of it, and how the different features rotate to form different features in a circular motion.

drawing workshop

we had a drawing workshop this week, which i found really useful. The work we were creating was quick and relaxed, i like working this way as my drawings often look a lot more relaxed and less forced; so doing it every so often really helps to remind me to work this way more often. 
The workshop involved us watching video clips and then pausing the video and drawing the scene. We had between 30 seconds and 3 minutes to draw the scene, so the results were quite varied where in some images all we had time for was the basic outline, and in others we had time to add more tone to the images.
We've got another workshop next week so it will be interesting to see what we do then.

fact project

We went on a trip on the last day of term back in December to the Oxford Natural History museum, and the Pitt Rivers museum. The museums are great and well worth a visit, such a nicely composed collection and it's all housed in a massive beautiful building. I instantly wanted to focus my project on the pieces in the natural history museum, which in retrospect was a little too hastier decision, as the Pitt Rivers museum had hundreds of thousands of things to look at, and had a little more variety, but never mind. Here are some of my drawings from the project so far, most of them were done on site so they're just quite quick sketches, others were done from watching animated youtube videos of how joints work and move, which was quite fun to do, and layer up the drawings

vocabulary project

Here are some of the drawings i did for the 'vocabulary' project where we got given a long set of words to a illustrate. For the drawings we had to choose two colours opposite on the colour wheel and dark neutral colour, so i chose black, blue and orange.

letterpress

I had the letterpress workshop today, it was quite confusing to start off with as it's all quite technical with working out the spacing and picas and things. I got given the sentence 'All things are delicately connected', i chose to go with 'cochin' font i believe, my first choice was 'Plantin' but some of the letters were stored away; i worked in 60pt and 30pt letters.

I got the hang of it in the end i think, so it will be fun to experiment with type more in my work, as the quality of the prints are great, and there are so many different types to play around with.

publish project

I've been working on the new 'publish' project at the moment, we've been given a list of just over 30 words to draw, using two opposite colours on the colour wheel and a dark neutral colour, so i'm working with blue, orange and black. I'm quite looking forward to creating a large mass of imagery to work with. Alongside this we have various workshops going on, i've signed up to letterpress tomorrow so i'm excited to see what that's like, and I'm really looking forward to the bookbinding workshop in a week or two.
In the meantime here is some imagery that i've been working on:

A1 pieces

We also got set the task to develop an image at minimum A1 size, here is my first attempt:

There are some bits of it i like, like the dean at the centre top and Babette in the centre but a lot of the other areas are weaker than i wanted, so i created another image:

this went better, and i replicated the composition used in this William Blake painting:

and applied some of the ideas used to my own work. I am pleased with the detail of the lower part featuring Babette serving the two sisters, and the image of their father the dean went ok but the people around it are rushed and needed more time to be spent on them.

I have decided from this that because i spent little time on a book task that we were set, that i would try to translate these pieces into more sequential work in a book. I have begun working on it:

I'd like to carry on with it, it just depends how i go with other stuff i have on.
